After patrolling into the early morning hours, covering a ten-mile circumference north of where Dusty’s truck had been recovered, Lou Wright dropped Dusty at his home and told him to get a few hours of sleep, he’d pick him up at about nine. That would give them each time to feed their livestock and finish morning chores. Then they’d get back to work trying to find the outlaw, probably start by checking back in at the command post to see if there had been any new developments.

But the next morning the sheriff called Lou at his home just before he left and told him there had been a pretty bad blunder on the part of his clerk back at the office. Leroy Thurman, a local retired rancher who now worked as a greeter at the Kmart, had called yesterday afternoon to report his car had been stolen. The clerk told him all the deputies were tied up on an emergency, and asked if he could wait until tomorrow to file his report. Mr. Thurman did, he waited until this morning, and at eight o’clock sharp he walked into the sheriff’s office and made his report. The report stated that his car had been stolen the day before from the Kmart parking lot. Lou sighed into the phone and said he’d be over at the C.P. in a few minutes, they could discuss it more then.
